Whale Rider is a story based in New Zealand of an eleven year old girl who hopes to become chief of a tribe who traditionally only chooses boys to be chief. The tradition has been carried out since a man named Paikea escaped death after his canoe capsized by riding to shore on the back of a whale a thousand years ago. In order to become chief she must prove herself worthy in the hope that her grandfather, Koro will break away from his tradtional values and help her fulfill her destiny.
